Heavy copper PCBs are classed as copper weights over 3oz and Extreme Heavy Copper up to 30oz.
Heavy copper provides benefits such as increased endurance to thermal strains, increased current carrying capacity and increased mechanical strength at connector sites and in PTH holes.
One of the over-looked benefits is we can produce boards with different copper weights on the outer layers. You can have a control section and a power section on the same layer of a PCB it is possible to plate different copper weights on the same outer layer.
By using a multi-stage additive process the overall package size can be smaller and the layer count reduced.
The example shown shows both 30 oz and 1½ oz copper plated on the same layer.
